Beyond Pen & Paper

Humble Beginnings

Ever since I started my journey as a Dungeon Master and as I started to build out the fantasy realm of Eldwin, I needed to collect all my notes, ideas and content.

I was testing a lot of the tools I had heard good things from, like Kanka, WorldAnvil and such, but I was constantly looking out for another tool that felt right for me.

What Worked For Me

I realised I didn't have much need to build timelines and a map (that's what I used Inkarnate for) but something simple, yet flexible. Two summers ago, I started moving everything into Notion, as my ongoing campaign needed a place to house it's adventure logs and NPC profiles. Notion made all of this very easy for me, and I had only scratched the surface.

A brilliant visual showcase of all the fantastical peoples of Eldwin

I began taking all my homebrew items, spells and character options. I created sorting and filters, and within a few days of learning, I had a wiki of my own! Searchable with easy filtering and sorting!

Evergrowing Library

As my library of homebrew content grew, so did my skill with Notion. I had a lot of fun putting it all together. When it was time for me to create the ideas around the products for this site, it was a godsend to have - what essentially became a source of truth with my Notion database.

A lovely listing of all my magical items - fully sortable and filterable

Not many rare staffs that requires attunement from a Sorcerer…

It became clear how many Rare items I had versus Uncommon items, how many required attunement and such. How I had only made three spells for the Bard class but almost 50 for the Wizard class!

It was satisfying, as I could mould this database into what I required to put things into a manageable system - and draw insights from it on what to create next!

Nice article views for all the individual items. Also – free item! Neat.
